I’ve pretty much said everything I wanted to in that title, so let me keep it short.
I’m human. So are you. When we connect with each other, neither of us are connecting from some perfect corporate ivory tower. (Which is great, because that sounds like a terrible place to work.)
Still, working from offices has furthered this weird myth that we all live in the magical hypothetical vacuums we learned about in physics class. (You know, those problems that started with “Imagine you’re in a vacuum…” and then all you could think about was “Yikes! No kidding I have a problem, if I’m living in a vacuum…”)
In reality, we live in very real places. Earlier today, I was on calls, interviews, trainings, and webinars while my roof was being re-tiled. Yesterday the internet was uncooperative. Reality.
Think twice before you judge someone else’s reality. Sure, if it’s interfering with understanding, I get it. Still, it’s a chance to be human. To connect. To practice real empathy.
As inconvenient as the real world is, I’m glad that we get to live in it together. Way better than that ivory tower — and way way better than the vacuum. Am I right?
See you out there. 🙂
