Zero bias here, but Save Our Surveys is one of the greatest workshops we’ve had this year.
Okay, yes, some bias — but at least we identified it early! One of the key goals of the SOS series is to help participants recognize issues early on, so that’s totally on point. 😉
We all know that making even small mistakes at the beginning of a survey project can have huge ramifications down the road. Issues in the survey itself can lead to:
- Low response rates
- Poor or inconsistent participation across all questions
- Insufficient data
- Inaccurate results
- Mis-/non-representative results
- Wasted participant time
- Wasted administration time
- Wasted resources
- We can go on…
We could go on, but you get it: Mistakes pile up, and the best time to avoid them is before they start!

Nobody’s perfect, so…
In reality, we all make mistakes, so we’ve designed the Save Our Surveys workshop sessions to help sharpen survey skills and fine-tune focus on those final details that really make the difference.
We started off this exercise as part of a previous webinar on boosting survey response rates, and it was a hit! We got great feedback from participants who enjoyed testing their skills and engaging in rapid rounds of critique sharing in the chat thread.

A few high-level reminders
In this session, we shared feedback on five separate example surveys and organized our pointers around five focus areas. Just have a minute to brush up? Here you go! To make your next survey better, remember:
- Content & Context
- Clarity
- Consistency
- Check your tech
- Visualize success
Too high level? Of course! But as important as this high-level stuff is, you really need to get into the details to avoid fails, get results, and learn from your data!
“This is the second one I’ve completed, very interactive and an excellent way to train. It is quick, easy to interact and the end provides bullet points of best practice.” – Workshop participant
Learning together
One more of our favorite elements of this session (I told you this would be a biased post!) was the quick community connections we built. It’s one thing to watch a presentation, but being actively involved in the session has a huge impact on the experience. Active engagement makes it more likely that participants learn, that they benefit from each other’s knowledge, and that everyone has a more satisfying and fulfilling experience (including the presenter!).
As one participant put it, “Others on the call had really wonderful observations and points that I felt were just as good as Melissa’s presentation.” I agree! This was a super-fast session, by design, and I was really impressed by how quickly those involved shared their critiques and how much they engaged with each others’ feedback. Feedback about feedback? Awesome all around!
Other participants had great feedback about how to continue to improve this series, and I hope you’ll see continued growth in future sessions. After all, we love feedback, too! 😉
