2021 is upon us, and I think I can speak for everyone by saying that we are happy last year is in the past. Any new year offers a great opportunity to reflect and to solidify goals you want to achieve throughout the year. For your organization, it’s good to set 2021 resolutions for your team. Whether it’s financial goals or internal goals you want to hit, creating these with your team can help everyone stay on the same page for 2021.
With virtual work still the norm during these strange days, it can be hard to build and sustain culture from afar. With that in mind, here are a couple of things you can do with resolutions to help build and strengthen your culture in 2021, even if you aren’t in the office.
Take time to reflect
Look at what you wanted to accomplish in 2020 and how it turned out. Alright, well, 2020 didn’t turn out how anyone expected. If you’re like me, all of your resolutions flew out the window when the pandemic came crashing down. Still, look at what you wanted to achieve and see what you actually accomplished. Are there any resolutions that you could try for again or build on in 2021? Reflection is always a smart move, and having your team reflect individually and together can encourage everyone to bring their best to work every day in this new year. As a manager, supporting employees’ goals from the start ensures they’re on the right track.
How do you want to look back on 2021?
Sometimes it’s difficult to write down what goals you want to achieve in the new year. A good exercise to help brainstorm is to envision yourself at the end of 2021. What goals would you be happy that you achieved? What goals could you realistically achieve by the end of 2021? If you envision yourself at the end of 2021 reflecting on what you’d be happy with, it’ll give you a better idea of how to start the new year off right. This will help bring a focus and energy to 2021 both personally and professionally. If your team does that everyday, you are way ahead of the curve.
Encourage sharing
New Year’s resolutions are great both professionally and personally. If others feel comfortable with it, encourage your team to share their personal resolutions! Sharing can be fun, and it can help bond employees. Maybe a couple of team members have similar goals, and they could work together to achieve them or encourage each other from afar.
Keep in mind…
You probably won’t reach your resolutions the way you imagined that you’d reach them. Life always throws in challenges and roadblocks that are hard to anticipate. You might not even achieve all of your resolutions. I wouldn’t give yourself a hard time about it. Life is crazy and things can change on a dime, adjust what you can and do your best! Here’s hoping that 2021 treats everybody a little better than 2020 did.
