The conversation around AI in the workplace is often dominated by headlines—automation replacing jobs, robots taking over, or breakthroughs in generative AI like ChatGPT. But what do employees themselves think about AI’s growing presence in their day-to-day work?
To find out, we surveyed over 1,000 employees across industries in the United States to understand how AI is impacting their jobs, how they feel about it, and how well their employers are preparing for an AI-driven future. The findings, published in the Sogolytics report AI at Work: Employee Perspectives and Organizational Readiness, reveal a workforce navigating rapid technological change with a mix of curiosity, concern, and a clear demand for support.
A few stats to start with…
- 67% of employees are at least moderately concerned that AI could replace their jobs in the next 10 years. While 14% are not concerned at all, nearly 4 in 10 employees said they are very or extremely concerned. That’s a clear signal that organizations must address fears around job displacement—and back up reassurances with action.
- Only 51% of employees say their company has a clear AI adoption strategy. Despite growing integration of AI into daily workflows, more than a third of employees reported that their organization lacks a defined approach, while 14% weren’t sure either way. This lack of clarity undermines trust and contributes to resistance.
- AI is already part of daily work for many. In fact, 30% of employees said they use AI-powered tools multiple times a day. Yet not everyone feels prepared—47% of those with hands-on AI experience said they’ve never received formal training from their employer.
- Trust in AI systems remains fragile. More than half (54%) of employees believe all AI-generated work should be reviewed by a human, and nearly half (48%) think AI vendors should be held accountable for mistakes. Employees are embracing AI, but they’re not ready to remove human oversight anytime soon.
Addressing AI tension at work
These insights reveal a critical tension in the workplace: employees are engaging with AI more than ever, but many feel left to figure it out on their own. Without strong communication, training, and governance, organizations risk falling short on both performance and morale.
That’s why this report doesn’t just outline what employees are experiencing—it offers strategic recommendations to help companies close the gaps. From investing in upskilling to implementing ethical AI frameworks, the way forward depends on building trust, clarity, and confidence across the workforce.
The future of work
As the world of work evolves, human resources and technology experts are striving to build a better balance between human ingenuity and AI-powered productivity.
Importantly, however, each organization’s path is unique. From building your own AI policy to training up team members, gauging sentiment of your own workplace is critical.
