Use What You Know to Reach Your 2018 Goals

The new year has started. It’s a great time to:

1. Wipe the slate clean.
2. Focus on what you really want.
3. Chart your course.

Feels kind of ‘meh’, right? Or maybe just a little tired. So how about turning those goals into something a little more a-meh-zing? Say, a little something like:

1. Embrace exactly where you are in this moment.
2. Decide what it will take to make 2018 your most successful year yet.
3. Align your actions with reaching your goals, every day.

Resolutions come easy for some and are a little more challenging for others. Earlier this week we poked fun at the idea of setting a goal to create goals. Ambitious, we know. But, it’s easy to think of the new year as a fresh start; however, when it comes to your customers it’s unlikely they’re going to give you a “do-over”.

So maybe instead of starting from scratch, you assess where you are now, identify tools and resources you have available, and go from there. Here’s how I see making these new adventures actionable:

• Embrace exactly where you are in this moment.

Take a snapshot of how you ended the year. What data do you have and what information is missing? What picture does your data paint about your efforts, accomplishments, and interactions from the last 12 months? Now, how does that make you feel? Excited, hopeful, maybe a little disappointed? Whatever it is, it’s okay because now you can move on to what’s next.

• Decide what it will take to make 2018 your most successful year yet.

If thinking about how your 2017 wrapped up still has you doing cartwheels, use that energy to keep pushing forward. What breakthroughs did you have and how do you ensure you create those same opportunities? Be specific and set quantifiable objectives. Conversely, if 2017 has you feeling a little less than awesome, have no fear. Take what worked and commit to feeding that engine. Then decide what happens to the underperforming areas; either eliminate them or keep them and make improvements.

To make 2018 your best year yet, you have to be marching towards your goals every day. Sure, there will be setbacks and frustrations but when you’re committed to your goal and measuring progress along the way you’ll get there.
